Careers in Litigation Support and E-Discovery
Careers in Litigation Support and E-DiscoveryCareers in Litigation Support and E-DiscoveryIn response to the increased automation of legal processes, skyrocketing volumes of electronic data and the growth of large-scale, complex litigation, a new occupation in the legal field has emerged the litigation betreuung professional. This cutting-edge profession combines the legal knowledge of attorneys and paralegals with the technical skills of information technology professionals. Litigation support professionals help identify, preserve, collect, produce and manage electronically stored information (ESI) in litigation. Amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure extending the rules of discovery to electronic information (such as e-mails, spreadsheets, voicemails and other digital data) combined with growing volumes of ESI have fueled the growth of this fledgling profession to address the electronic realities of a digital age. The explosive growth of electronically stored informatio n has increased the cost and complexity of the litigation process and posed new challenges to organizations and the legal professionals that serve them. The growth of ESI has created an unprecedented demand for litigation support skills, pushing salaries to new levels. As the litigation support industry has matured, a variety of specialized roles has developed. Since the industry is still relatively new, titles are inconsistent, interchangeable and evolving. For example, an analyst in one firm might be known as a specialist in another firm and a project manager in yet another organization. Below are several of the most common litigation support positions as well as links to mora information on each position, including job duties, education, skills, salaries, and employment outlook. Document Coder In complex, large-scale litigation and regulatory investigations, the volume of electronic data is too large to manually sort, organize and review (also called objective coders, database coders, legal coders, or litigation coders) review and code documents, files and other data so that the litigation team can more easily search and retrieve information during the course of the case or project. A document coding job is generally an entry-level position and is agood way to gain exposure to the legal and litigation support fields. Litigation Support Analyst The litigation support analyst is generally an entry-level position. In some firms, this position is called a litigation support specialist. The litigation support analyst is responsible for the day-to-day litigation support needs of assigned cases and projects. The analyst builds, maintains and troubleshoots databases for large, complex litigation in which the documents - which may number in the millions - and data are too voluminous to sort and analyze manually. Litigation support analysts typically report to a project manager or litigation support manager. In larger organizations, the role of litigation suppo rt analyst is often broken into junior and senior levels and analysts move up to senior analyst positions after they reach a certain experience level. Litigation Support Specialist While the litigation support specialist (also known as litigation technology specialist) is generally a step up from analyst, in some markets, the terms analyst and specialist are used interchangeably or the titles are reversed (i.e., a specialist is the entry-level position and an analyst is the next progression in the career path). Often the roles of the analyst and specialist intertwine and overlap. Litigation support specialists usually possess a bachelors degree and at least five years of experience in the litigation support field. In large organizations, specialists typically report to a project manager in charge of a unit, project or department. In smaller organizations, they usually report to a litigation support manager. Project Manager The project manager, alternatively known as the liti gation support supervisor or project coordinator, is an expanding role for litigation support professionals. Project managers frequently work their way up through the ranks from a litigation support analyst or specialist position. Project managers generally report to the litigation support manager and provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to the litigation support staff. In larger organizations, experienced project managers may move up the career ladder to senior project manager. Litigation Support Manager Litigation support managers generally ascend the litigation support career ladder from analyst, specialist and project manager roles. In larger organizations, they typically report to a firmwide litigation support director. In smaller organizations, they might report to the IT director, managing partner, CMO or another executive within the company or firm. Firm-Wide Litigation Support Director At the top of the litigation support, career ladder is the firm-wide litig ation support director also known as VP of global legal services or firmwide director of practice support. Litigation support directors are responsible for the management and marketing of litigation support services and technologies across all law firm offices or corporate business units. In smaller firms, the litigation support manager and litigation support director are one and the same.

How to Talk to Your Boss About a Co-worker You Hate - The Muse
How to Talk to Your Boss About a Co-worker You Hate - The MuseHow to Talk to Your Boss About a Co-worker You Hate So, how are things going at the amtsstube? I asked my dinnerhalb companion, a longtime business veteran who manages a small team. Last week, you mentioned some kind of conflict. What happened? She told me the story about how two of her employees were having trouble working together and then individually coming into her office to complain about the other person. Its frustrating, she said. Because one person will come into my office saying, so-and-so did this But when I ask the other person, did you do that? Theyll say, I never did that And vice versa. She sighed, heavily. Its becoming a he-said-she-said situation. I honestly dont know what to do.She ordered another martini. I mulled over the story, sipping my Old Fashioned. In your fantasy world... I began. When this kind of conflict happens, and an employee comes into your office to talk about it, what would you like them t o say?She paused, considering. What I dont want is complaining and blaming. What I do want is a positive attitude. A desire to make things better, not just vent.OK, I said. So, what would that sound like, specifically?Several sips later, we came up with the following conversation script Hey Managers Name,Thanks for agreeing to meet with me today. I know youve got a lot going on, and I dont want to add anything more to your plate, but theres something Id like to discuss. Im hoping it wont take more than a few minutes. Before I begin, I want you to know that Im not here to vent or complain. Theres a situation thats come up- that Im a part of- and Im here to find a solution, with your help. So heres whats happening Whenever Other Persons Name does describe the thing thats causing the conflict, I feel describe how you feel. This situation has come up several times describe a couple of specific incidents. I respect Other Persons Name and I love being part of this team, but these feelings are making it harder for me to do my work, effectively. And while I cant know for sure, Id have to guess that this situation is affecting Other Persons Name as well.I want to resolve this before it turns into a bigger problem, for both of us. Ive tried to resolve it on my own by describe something youve tried, but that didnt have the effect I was hoping for. I know theres a good solution, but Im not seeing it clearly, which is why Im here seeking some help. Im hoping that you might be willing to offer some guidance, hold a conversation with the two of us, or perhaps bring in an outside mediator or conflict resolution specialist. Again Im not here to vent or blame. Im aware that Im just as much a part of this conflict as the other person. Id really like to find a solution that makes both of us happy and strengthens the team. Thanks for listening.Something like that? I asked.Yes she said. If someone came into my office and said those words to me, calmly, Id be seriously impressed. Id think, this is a great person to have around. Someone I can trust to remain cool under pressure, and someone I might want to promote to a leadership level, someday. So, there you have it A boss-approved script to use the next time youve got a workplace conflict.Naturally, you may need to adjust the script depending on the nature of the conflict, your companys policies, and your relationship with your boss. But the main thing to remember isYoure there to find solutions- not rant, tattle, or uncork your emotions. Channel your inner peace-maker, and go set things right.

Crossing the Ocean Blue
Crossing the Ocean Blue Crossing the Ocean Blue Crossing the Ocean Blue At a time when world maps still warned of dragons and sea serpents to the west of Europe and even routine fishing trips could become life-and-death affairs, to say that setting off from Spain on a sea voyage across the Atlantic Ocean required nerves of steel would be a serious understatement. To say that accomplishing the voyage successfully required the most cutting edge technology and engineering humanity had to offer in the late 15th century might be even more of one. Yet sailing due west across the turbulent Atlantic is just what Cristoforo Colombo or Christopher Columbus as he is known to English speakers did when he and his three-ship armada set off due west in August of 1492. It is no secret that in modern pop culture Columbus has become a political lightning rod for many, yet in all the controversy surrounding him, the world may just be losing sight of what an astounding accomplishment his three voyages were, and how they set the stage for the modern world that was to come. Intestinal fortitude aside, the technology and engineering required to successfully cross the Atlantic were simply unparalleled in the time. Renaissance Tech Of course Columbus had studied math, celestial navigation, and map-making by the time he set off on his first journey. But, says Mark Gist, historian at the Columbus Santa Maria, a museum-quality replica of Columbuss flagship in (appropriately enough) Columbus, Ohio, The most obvious piece of technology was the ships. The Atlantic has strong storms and a ship built to take them [had to be] stronger than any other ship in use at the time. Replicas of Columbuss boats. Top to bottom: Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta. Images: Wikimedia Commons Designed and engineered to be sturdier than any other ships of the day, Columbuss ships could withstand punishment at sea that would have wrecked most contemporary ships. Gist goes on to describe how Columbuss boats were also designed and engineered for different purposes, complementing each other as they made the journey to the West Indies. The Santa Maria was a type called a Nao. The other two ships were Caravels, which was a better ship for a voyage of exploration. The caravels were faster and could sail closer to the wind. Columbuss ship theSanta Mariathen, at 98 feet long, was large enough to carry provisions for such a long journey along with the anticipated cargo that would be brought home while the Nina and Pinta were sleek and fast enough to speed ahead and make the journey quickly, which the Pinta did when it left behind the slower Santa Maria once land was sighted. Both types of vessels also would have used lateen rigging, which was a type of sail that attached to a spar and allowed for increased capabilities. The lateen rigging rose better toward the wind and was far more maneuverable, while also allowing tacking close to the wind. This meant that no matter which way the wind was blowing, Columbuss armada could continue to plow ahead. Another technological advancement that was critical to Columbuss journey was the weaponry onboard. In 1492, gunpowder was still a newer development, so the fact that his ships were equipped with cannons on mechanical swivels made them virtually indestructible. Thus, his crews had little to fear from pirates or hostile navies, as few would dare to attack such a fleet, knowing it would mean certain defeat. As Gist points out, in the larger picture, this enabled the Portuguese and Spanish to become global powers in this era in the Indian Ocean as well. The combination of the strength of the ships and the cannons allowed the Portuguese to dominate the Indian Ocean after sailing around the tip of Africa, he says. In a battle for control of the Indian Ocean, they could not be sunk. Even the goods Columbus brought with him to trade in the Americas were chosen for their technological superiority, and just as he hoped, they became highly desirable once trading began. He knew that beads and knitted caps had been successful in the African trade so he brought a large quantity of these, says Gist. No one in America was able to produce the green and yellow beads like the ones that Columbus had and sheep were unknown in the Americas, so wool was a novelty. On his historic journey, Columbus benefitted from courage, ambition, and of course, his yearning for power and wealth. Yet more than anything else, he benefitted from technology that was far ahead of its time. Ambition and drive will take you far, but in order to sail the ocean blue in fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus needed engineering. For Further Discussion The most obvious piece of technology was the ships. The Atlantic has strong storms and a ship built to take them [had to be] stronger than any other ship in use at the time.Mark Gist, historian, Columbus Santa Maria

Millennials stay in jobs longer than Gen X ever did
Millennials stay in jobs longer than Gen X ever did Millennials stay in jobs longer than Gen X ever did Thereâs a stereotype that millennials are job hoppers, ready to drop their employer at the drop of a hat when they get bored or unhappy. Itâs all part of the unflattering stereotype of selfish millennials being part of the âme me meâ generation. But that narrative doesnât hold up to reality, according to new numbers from the Pew Research Center.Millennials arenât job-hoppersLooking at U.S. Department of Labor numbers, the Pew Research Center found that millennials are staying in jobs longer than people who are a decade older or more. Comparing millennials in 2016 with Generation X workers in 2000, researchers found that 63.4% of millennials today are staying in their jobs for at least a year, compared to only 59.9% of Gen X workers at the same age.And millennials have lasting power. When it comes to staying in a job for more than five years, Gen X and millennials are neck and neck at 22%Why are millennials not changing jobs? One reason for this is that millennials today ha ve a higher level of education, which has been linked to longer tenures at work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that those who had a high school degree were more likely to stay with an employer for 10 years than those who didnât have that degree. 46% of millennial women in 2016 had at least a bachelorâs degree compared with 34% of Gen X workers back in 2000.Staying in a job longer may not always be a good sign, however. For one thing, millennials may be staying in their jobs because theyâre worried it may be hard to find a job elsewhere. Their time in one position could also indicate that thereâs not much room to move up into senior positions that are occupied by Gen Xers or Boomers. And another possibility: heavy student-loan payments, which has hit people under 35 harder than any other generation, could be making millennials attached to their paychecks and, as a result, their jobs. Why is job-hopping so bad, anyway?Job-hopping has long had a bad rap, with much ink spilled about how terrible it looks to have a series of one-year positions on a resumé. Changing jobs showed flakiness, disloyalty, or other warning signs, experts have said. But times change. Corporate layoffs and restructurings are common. The 50-year career with a Rolex and a pension at the end is rare and loyalty is less of a factor in many companies. Even baby boomers acknowledged that itâs much harder for young adults to get their careers started than it was for their generation. The real work to be done is to take the stigma off job-hopping, which is often the best way to get a promotion or a raise. Taking a better opportunity - often the real reason for job changes - is also a good reason to pack up. In 2013, Forbes found that an employee could get up to 20% increase in salary for leaving compared with the 3% average raise an employee can expect to receive. The truth is that it may take several jobs to get to a good place in a career and know what you want. Millennials have demonstrated they have staying power when theyâre in the right place, so when millennials do switch jobs, itâs probably not flakiness. It could be the sign of an important strategic switch.

7 Clear Signs That Your Careers Going Well (That Have Nothing to Do With Your Salary)
7 Clear Signs That Your Careers Going Well (That Have Nothing to Do With Your Salary) 7 Clear Signs That Your Careers Going Well (That Have Nothing to Do With Your Salary) Success means different things to different people. For many, accumulating wealth or power are definitive signs of achievement. For you, it may be as simple (or complex) as being happy. And although an attitude of continuous self-improvement reaps great rewards, itâs beneficial to stop every now and then and appreciate what weâve already accomplished. With that in mind, here are seven unexpected signs that youâre more successful than you think: 1. Youâve Made Tons of Progress When I was struggling to learn a language, a wise person once told me: âDonât think about how far youâve got to go. Look back, and consider how far youâve already come.â This principle applies across our lives. Think about the version of yourself from five years ago. What experience have you collected? What lessons have you learned? The truth: Youâve come a long way. 2. You Set Your Own Priorities Your business may not be making millions, but you love what you do. Or, youâve learned the invaluable lesson that money canât buy more time- so you spend as much of that time as you can with family and friends (or doing whatâs important to you). Establishing priorities is half the recipe for success. The other half is sticking to them. 3. You Love to Learn Youâre a voracious reader. You love to try new things. You donât mind making mistakes. Why? Because every new journey broadens your horizons and helps you to better understand yourself, others, and the world around you. Mistakes arenât failures- theyâre only more opportunities to learn. 4. You Use Goals as Stepping Stones We tend to measure success with the big things- graduating from school, earning our first promotion, even getting married. But itâs the small, behind-the-scenes goals that lead to the bigger accomplishments: every passed test, every productive work assignment, getting past that horrid first date. All great successes begin with smaller ones. 5. You Cultivate Good Habits Itâs been famously said by Aristotle: âWe are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.â You know how you get up early every morning? How about that fitness routine you stick to? Or the fact that you work hard to always arrive a little bit early? Reaching goals requires hard work and perseverance. But regardless of where youâre trying to go, the right habits are helping you get there. 6. You Strive to Be Emotionally Intelligent None of us can perfectly control our emotions. But by working to identify your emotions, realizing the major role they play in your life, and using that understanding to inform your decision making, youâre vastly more successful than you would be otherwise. 7. You Havenât Given Up One of the biggest keys to success is persistence. So many people give up right before crossing the finish line, or just before reaching the goal theyâve invested so much time and effort to achieve. But thatâs not you. Youâre still here- day in, day out, moving forward, determined to leave it all on the table. And thatâs what makes you a success. More From Inc. Tips for Choosing Between a MPA or CPM
Tips for Choosing Between a MPA or CPM Tips for Choosing Between a MPA or CPM One of the common ways public servants advance their careers is to pursue graduate degrees or professional certifications. While some career paths lend themselves to specific degrees or certifications. For instance, a master of public health would be beneficial for someone seeking senior positions in health policy. For those who do not have a specific degree or certification that will help them advance their careers, the degree and certified public manager designation are achievements that can benefit just about any public employee looking rise through the ranks. A common choice workers in all levels of government face is whether to pursue an MPA degree or a CPM designation. Here are the major factors playing into this choice. Stage of Career Government workers late in their careers tend not to seek advanced degrees or certifications. They have so much experience that initials behind their name do not to give them a leg up in the government hiring process. Those early in their careers and in the middle of them, however, to pursue advanced degrees and certifications. Mid-career public servants gravitate toward the CPM certification. These people have enough experience to legitimately apply for senior positions but would look more attractive to hiring managers if they have an advanced degree or professional certification listed on the job application. All things equal, a certification could push one candidate over another and make the difference between getting an interview and getting removed from the hiring process. Younger workers tend to go for graduate degrees. These people are used to meeting requirements laid out by professors and are familiar with the bureaucratic processes universities put their customers through. Mid-career employees are sometimes intimidated by the prospect of going back to school. They havenât taken formal classes for perhaps decades and do not know how they will assimilate themselves into a graduate program. Time Commitment MPA programs take about two years to complete on a full-time schedule or about three years on a part-time schedule. Some universities require MPA students to attend full-time and only offer classes during the day. Obviously, this does not work for the vast majority of government workers. This is why more and more universities have begun offering classes on evenings and weekends. This is more conducive to a part-time school schedule government workers need. Like MPA programs, CPM programs take two to three years to complete; however, the time commitment within those few years is significantly less. Participants meet a day or two per month. Government organizations typically allow staff to use work time to attend such training because the content employees learn can be applied directly to their jobs. While applying material right away may seem like an ancillary benefit, it is really a primary benefit. Participants can show their managers immediately how the program is impacting their work performance and improving their management skills. Cost Some government organizations pay for employees to take courses within MPA and CPM programs. When government organizations reimburse college course such as those within MPA programs, some require employees to remain with the organization for a specified period of time. Otherwise, the employee must reimburse the organization for tuition paid. Employees must pass a course before an employer reimburses for it. If someone considering an MPA or CPM program will not be reimbursed by an employer, cost becomes a major consideration. MPA programs are much more expensive than CPM programs. Level of Prestige As noted earlier, MPA programs require a greater time commitment than CPM programs. Correspondingly, MPA programs also require a greater amount of effort. Because MPA programs require more effort than CPM programs, MPA degrees are more prestigious than CPM designations. This does not minimize the value of a CPM designation, but it does place a higher value on the MPA in the minds of hiring managers.

Here is some of the worst advice being given to Millennials
Here is some of the worst advice being given to Millennials Here is some of the worst advice being given to Millennials What is the worst advice being given to Millennials? Here are the 7 pieces of advice that I HATE hearing people give Millennials.1. Work harder you lazy punk!Despite popular belief, most Millennials arenât entitled, lazy, or stupid. In fact, to the contrary, they work way too hard.I know dozens of guys in their mid-20âs who are literally working away the best decade of their life because they want to be a #hustler and achieve financial freedom. While thereâs nothing wrong with working hard, you shouldnât sacrifice your quality of life for a big paycheck.Enjoy your 20âs. Work hard. But LIVE too.2. Just figure out what you want to no with your life already! No â¦You donât need to figure out what you want to do with your life yet.You have more options than your parents did and exponentially more options than your grandparents could have dreamed of, so they can shove it if they think they have the right to tell you to âHurry it up and make up your mind already.âEmbrace slown ess.Try out dozens of different career paths and figure out what you like.Honestly, your 20âs are for throwing crap at the wall and seeing what you like.Itâs not for figuring yourself out anymore.3. Go to college and get into debt for your âfutureâCollege is largely a waste of time.Unless you have your sights set on a career in finance, medicine, or law, you donât need a degree and going into $50,000â"$100,000 of debt for a Liberal Arts degree is the dumbest thing you can do.Go find a job working for a company that you like.If you canât find a job, then go MAKE one.Show up and just start doing stuff, ask if you can help out without getting paid. Eventually, someone will offer you something.Donât be afraid to eat sh-t for a few years so that you can eat like a king for the rest of your life. College is a waste of time, but education isnât.4. Your 30s are your new 20sNo ⦠Theyâre not.Even though I donât think you should have your entire life figured out in your 20s, you need to be building a strong foundation for your future.Itâs ok to party a little bit and goof around, but you need to take your time and your life SERIOUSLY.Start going to the gym, read books every day, if you donât know what you want to do from a career standpoint, actively try out new things and eliminate options you donât enjoy.DO NOT waste your 20s playing video games and drinking yourself into oblivion.Thatâs a one-way ticket to a life of regret.Work hard, build good habits, educate yourself massively, just donât put too much pressure on yourself to actually achieve âsuccessâ or âfind yourselfâ yet. If you play your 20s right then you will get those rewards in your early 30s.5. You guys should just get married already!Letâs see â¦The divorce rates are skyrocketing, more people than ever report being unhappy in their marriages, divorce will cost you half of your net worth (if youâre a man), and will probably leave you with trust issues and all so rts of other problems.⦠But yeah, letâs encourage naive 20-somethings who have never been in a REAL relationship to jump the gun and just get married. That sounds like a GREAT idea.In case you couldnât hear the sarcasm dripping from my voice, I do NOT encourage Millennials to get married young.I know that everyone is putting pressure on you to get hitched and you think it will be the best idea ever ⦠But just delay gratification and give your brain (and bank account and personality) a chance to mature before you make a life-altering decision like marriage.Ok?6. The job market is competitive!Sure, the job market is competitive. For people who want to work for sh-tty corporations and established âOld Moneyâ businesses. But if you want to get involved with the new rich? Itâs easier today than ever before. My Director of Content started working with me when he was 17. He didnât have a college degree (or even a high school degree). But he was a good writer and he just kept p estering me until I eventually got on the phone with him and he pitched his services for free.He worked for me for free for almost 2 months before I started paying him. Today he makes a healthy salary (in addition to pay from other clients that Iâve sent his way over the year) working for me ⦠And he still doesnât have a college degree. The fishing is best where the fewest go.So stop trying to get a job in the competitive markets and instead be willing to eat crap for a few months or years proving yourself at a startup or small business.Youâll quickly become indispensable and earn whatever you want.7. You can sleep when youâre deadSHUT UP!Sleep deprivation is literally killing our society and costs the economy more than $400 billion in lost productivity each year.Quit glorifying sleep deprivation and espousing ignorant ideas.Sleep is freaking important so stop vilifying Millennials for prioritizing sleep. If you arenât getting 8 hours a night, you are leaving productivity and performance on the table.Ignore your grandparents and get your zzzzâs.Youâll be glad that you did. This post first appeared on Quora.

How to Turn an Internship into a Job
How to Turn an Internship into a Job How to Turn an Internship into a Job If you are a new or recent graduate or a career changer, you may have found that the gateway to your chosen field involves an experience such as a postgraduate internship. Whether you didnt have the opportunity as an undergraduate to build the preferred profile of experience to enter your field, or if the traditional route of entry is through an internship, youll want to make the most of your time in order to improve your chances of landing a job afterward. Make some inquiries up front before committing to the internship to determine if the prospective employer has a history of offering full time jobs to high-performing interns. 12 Tips for Turning an Internship into a Job Here are some tips and strategies to increase your chances of securing that entry-level job. 1. As soon as you begin your internship, take every opportunity to introduce yourself to co-workers in as many roles and departments as possible. Capitalize on your status as the new intern who is curious about the roles that individuals play and the focus of various departments. Youll want to make a game out of how many times you can introduce yourself to someone new, saying something like: Hi! Im Sarah the new intern in Marketing and Im trying to get a good feel for what goes on around here. What is your role and what is the mission of your Department? Maybe we can grab a coffee some day and talk some more? Expand 2. Be ready to share with your new colleagues a concise summary of your interests and assets. You can then ask seasoned professionals to brainstorm with you regarding where those skills and interests might be best applied within their area of work. Try to include a couple of your passions, along with three or four areas of knowledge or expertise. For example, you might say: I graduated as an English Major with minors in marketing and communications, I love to write and I composed ads for the college newspaper. Im fascinated by why people choose to buy stuff and got really positive feedback from faculty regarding my marketing analysis with case projects. I was very active with my sorority and enjoyed planning and promoting events in my role as social chair. Expand 3. Exude positivity at all times. Be your best, congenial self, wear a ready smile and bring a can do attitude to work every day. Employers look for full-time employees who are a pleasure to have around and who are willing to do whatever it takes to move the team forward. Wipe the phrase its not my job from your consciousness. Do the little things and grunt work often assigned to an intern with a smile. 4. Try to arrive earlier than your boss if its possible, and stay late as well. Establish that you have a strong work ethic and are not afraid to devote lots of time and energy to your work. 5. Find out what people are reading to learn about trends and best practices in their field. Start to read those journals, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. Ask questions about emerging trends and how they might relate to your department and employer. Explore the possibility of participating in any professional development workshops or seminars offered by your employer. Employers want staff who are eager to learn and will keep up with developments in their field. But, remember to proceed with humility- dont act like a know-it-all. A curious approach couched in modesty will serve you best. 6. Treat the colleagues you meet as if you hope or expect that they will be mentors. If they realize that you view them as a mentor, then they may well start to act as one. Ask them for advice about job options and strategies for securing full-time work after they get to know you for awhile. Co-workers who are mentors will be more likely to point out jobs or recommend you for positions since they will feel it is expected of them in that role. 7. Look for opportunities to extend interactions with potential mentors beyond the workplace. Offer to buy them a cup of coffee to pick their brain. Tag along for the after-work happy hour. If they start to see you as a friend, then they will be more likely to advocate for you. Be careful about the side of yourself which you reveal in these more informal settings. For example, dont indulge in that extra drink or be flirtatious. You can be friendly but still professional, and as an intern, its important to err on the side of professionalism. 8. Be opportunistic about your involvement with projects. Notice who is under pressure and needs help, and offer to provide assistance. If your department is short-staffed due to emerging demands or turnover, look to insert yourself into those projects. Volunteer to stay late to help, and have an eye towards projects that provide an opportunity for you to master and document higher level skills. Consult with your supervisor to make sure she is comfortable with any overtures to other departments before proceeding. If you havent been assigned enough work to keep you busy, ask your boss What can I do to make your life easier? 9. Express gratitude to everyone who helps you. Provide a handwritten thank you note to your emerging mentors when they do something to help you. They can put it on their desk and be proud that they were helpful, and will likely look for other opportunities to assist you in the future. 10. After you have been working for a few weeks, ask your supervisor if you could meet briefly to discuss your progress. Look for regular opportunities to do so throughout your internship. Halfway through your experience, ask them what it would take for you to move into a full-time job. Be prepared to share what you have learned, why you would be interested, and how you think you could add value to the company. If there are absolutely no possibilities with that employer or if you think another type of work would be a better fit, ask how they might help you secure external employment. Mention that you are looking to do informational interviews with professionals in the field and would welcome any introductions to their contacts. 11. Develop your LinkedIn profile fully and link to as many employees at your firm as possible. If you shift your search to outside jobs, ask these individuals for introductions to their contacts. Heres what to include in your LinkedIn profile. 12. Keep a journal of your internship activities and note the times when you have added value. This list of mini accomplishments will be useful when it comes time to ask your boss for a full-time position. If you are already receiving a stipend or other modest compensation, this information will come in handy as you request more substantial or regular pay. Be Prepared to Explain Why Youre Worth The Pay When you request new compensation, you should always be prepared to furnish a rationale regarding why you deserve the pay. Emphasize specifics about how you have helped your department to reach their goals. The best time to ask for added compensation is after an accomplishment or when staff have recognized your contributions. Notice your supervisors moods: is there a time of day or week when she seems to be in a more positive frame of mind or less distracted by the pressures of her job? If so, thats the time to ask.

Embrace Lifelong Learning for the Sake of Your Career
Embrace Lifelong Learning for the Sake of Your Career Embrace Lifelong Learning for the Sake of Your Career Whether youâre working in your first job in accounting or looking to move on from the position youâve held for decades, your secret advantage is to never stop learning. Why? Because lifelong learning keeps your skills current. By keeping abreast of the latest software, by securing in-demand certifications in your field, and by maintaining key relationships, youâll make yourself more marketable and improve your odds for a productive future. Youâll stand out from your peers and be poised for career advancement. Lifelong learning is a win-win for all generations. While many baby boomers are retiring, others like me are changing careers, launching businesses, acquiring in-demand skills and achieving success in second acts - all the while expecting to work longer than our parents and grandparents. Why? 1. Weâre living longer - a lot longer When do you plan to retire? London Business School professors Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott - authors of the recent book, âThe 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevityâ - asked that very question of their students, adding, âIf you live 100 years, save around 10 percent of your income and want to retire on 50 percent of your final salary, at what age will you be able to retire?â Their startling answer? Into your 80s. The educators write about how weâve been raised with the notion of a three-stage life, with a short period of education followed by entry into the work world and finishing with retirement. But over the years, there have been constant gains in life expectancy that show no signs of leveling off. In this scenario of living to be centenarians, the second stage of employment - and the need for lifelong learning - is going to have to become much longer, or weâll all have to make do with our dwindling nest eggs. Don't miss our hot-off-the-press career insights in accounting and finance. SUBSCRIBE TO THE ROBERT HALF NEWSLETTER 2. The takeaway: Lifelong learning is an investment Absent lifelong learning, some of the imaginable scenarios are sobering: Our skills could become obsolete, we could get really bored or laid off, the companies we work for could close, and our bodies or brains (or both) could give out. All of this underscores the importance of lifelong learning. As Gratton and Scott write, âThis will mean serious investment in later life as people learn new [specialties and skills], so as to adapt to a changing employment landscape and to mentally refresh and stimulate.â Some of us think of our education as that thing we accomplished in our teens and 20s. Views about career development and work habits vary in our multigenerational workforce, but learning really should be viewed as an ongoing investment for all, like saving for a home, a childâs college education or retirement. Thereâs a dividend to be paid on education, no matter when you (or your offspring) get it. 3. Companies prefer avid learners As it turns out, lifelong learning is recognized in the workplace as a top attribute for professional success. According to a survey by staffing firm Accountemps, 30 percent of CFOs polled said they deemed motivation to learn new skills as an essential quality for advancement. This was followed by interpersonal skills (27 percent) and ability to adapt easily to change (24 percent). âSuccessful people never stop learning,â said Bill Driscoll, district president for Accountemps. âThe world is changing quickly and constantly, and it's vital to stay informed of the latest trends and sought-after skills in your industry.â See what CFOs say about learning and what it takes to be successful in the infographic, below. 4. We have so many ways to learn Think of how workplaces, best practices and even job searches have changed in the years since your career began. Today, itâs essential to stay abreast of changes in technology, evolving accounting standards and trends affecting the profession. Here are some ways to embrace lifelong learning, find purpose and advance your career: Join professional associations Attend conferences and seminars Participate in networking events Advance your education with a degree or certifications Seek professional development Shadow a colleague, find a mentor or become a mentor Volunteer outside of work Keep up with industry publications and journal articles
